Gocek to Gocek (Lycian Sailing Holiday). These guests failed to make a log entry. Chris Sanderson and Tara Stuckey, Courtenay, British Columbia, April 2008

Gocek to Gocek (Lycian Sailing Holiday). Beautiful boat, beautiful part of the world. We are very lucky to have Crewed Charter Sailing Turkeybeen able to spend these few days sailing with Gordon and Perran, and will remember them always. Anne Merwin and Andrew Shoaff, Washington, D.C., May 2008

Bodrum to Kos (Aegean Sailing Odyssey). With Gordon at the helm truly a voyage of fascination and discovery that enraptures. I can't wait to do it again - wonderful sailing. Mike Emery, Herzeliya, Israel, June 2008

Bodrum to Kos (Aegean Sailing Odyssey). This was my fourth trip on the T.G. Ellyson. I particularly enjoyed the swim off the rocks at Tripani Island near Leros and the 40-odd mile sail from Arki to Kos with winds gusting to 30 knots and 4-6 foot waves. The first mate Perran is a great addition to the crew and a pleasure to be with. Gordon is a great captain. Bart Gurewitz, Palos Verdes, California, June 2008

Bodrum to Kos (Aegean Sailing Odyssey). This was my only sail of more than ten miles. The first thing I noticed was the beautiful condition of the yacht, and within hours became aware of Gordon's love and knowledge of the culture and history of the region. Next came confidence in the seamanship of both Gordon and Perran. Dining on board was wonderful while dinner ashore in the evening with discussion of events and history made for a memorable experience. Steve Meleen, Mission Viejo, California, June 2008 Crewed Charter Sailing Greece

Kos to Rhodes (Cruising Cleopatra's Route). So happy to have found this charter to finish out our honeymoon! The boat is beautiful and the company divine. I had no idea what to expect having never been on a sailing vessel larger than a 2-person Laser. The feeling of being a guest on the sea guided by the wind was awe-inspiring. Much appreciated also was the professional competence of captain and crew, the private tour of the best restaurants in nearby ports, and the relaxed enjoyment-filled lifestyle that made everyday a treat. Much thanks! Cari Rosner Jelen, Berkeley, California, June 2008

Kos to Rhodes (Cruising Cleopatra's Route). Great adventures, company, and food! Thanks for an Crewed Charter Sailing Turkeyoutstanding honeymoon. You saved us from the sirens in the knick of time, defended us not only from Jason but from all of the Argonauts, and shared the treasure fairly. Thanks for the great times - no better way to spend a week. Dov Jelen, Berkeley, California, June 2008

Kos to Rhodes (Cruising Cleopatra's Route). Kate's microblogging transmissions: "Leaving Kos Harbor under sail. Oh my! How ink-blue is that sea. Took the wheel for a few moments." "First Turkish coffee in Knidos, Turkey. Another Hellenistic theatre to explore on hillside." "Tilos today. Best octopus salad and an ever expanding horizon of blue sea. Motorbikes to the Monastery of St. Pandeleimon with a natural icy spring. Bliss." "Blue and white, blue and white ... it's Greece." "Picking wild thyme by the roadside at midday. Cicadas going wild in the olive groves." "Where else but Greece for tomatoes, feta, olives and thick black Crewed Charter Sailing Greececoffee for breakfast. Yum." "Sitting under the trees at Ogun’s Place. Bonus: free wireless internet and great coffee." "Earthquake 6.3 on Richter scale off Simi felt like a tremble on the boat. All safe." "Another Med morning with fresh baked Turkish bread just delivered for breakfast. Mmm." "Write this down: must-go places - Aurora Restaurant, Selimiye, Turkey." "Bozburun and 5pm. Must be time for Turkish coffee and honey cake on the harbor." "End of the line.... Rhodes but no Colossus. Instead a fabulous medieval walled city." Kate Foy, Brisbane, Australia, July 2008

Kos to Rhodes (Cruising Cleopatra's Route). These guests failed to make a log entry. Terry and Leonie Walsh, Brisbane, Australia, July 2008

Crewed Charter Sailing Turkey

Gocek to Gocek (Lycian Sailing Holiday). Gordon/Saime, We had an enjoyable trip through some quite fascinating lands. Unexpected and pleasantly interesting people and places were aplenty. Turkey has much to offer and I am sure is not well understood by many who view it through the eyes of international media. T.G. Ellyson is a beautiful yacht and certainly pleasant vessel from which to see all these remote areas. No doubt we will dig back into our ancient history books to reacquaint ourselves with some of the people and places we were able to experience on the trip. The history here truly is venerable. Thanks for making the trip enjoyable for our boys. Saime, your hospitality was wonderful. Best Wishes, Ben, Mari, Bruce, and Alex Bowler, London, England, August 2008

Gocek to Gocek (Lycian Sailing Holiday). I liked sailing. From Bruce (age 5). Bruce Bowler, London, England, August 2008 Crewed Charter Sailing Turkey

Gocek to Gocek (Lycian Sailing Holiday). I loved sailing with you on the boat and driving. Maybe we can go sailing with you again someday. (Translated for Alex age 4.) Alexander Bowler, London, England, August 2008

Bodrum to Gocek (Cruising Cleopatra's Route). Thank you so much for a fantastic week of adventure on board the TGE. The hospitality, assistance and choice of locations gave us a memorable experience in the scorching Turkish August. Both Gordon and Perran could not have gone further out of their way to help us settle in. We might have to come back again to look for some of the things that we did not see so much of (dolphins and wind being the main two) but will both remember this trip for a long time. John Knowles, London, England, and Barbara Campos, Paris, France, August 2008

Gocek to Ova Buku (Cruising Cleopatra's Route). We had a delightful, memorable, time aboard the T.G. Ellyson! Porpoises plowed our helm between islands and we received a genuine sheet-hauling tutorial along the way. Sure, Gordon's a salty sea-captain who takes some warming to, but we wouldn't have Crewed Charter Sailing Turkeyit any other way. His sailing acumen and historical perspective on both Turkey and Greece are truly remarkable. Perran is a first-rate first-mate. If we could only cook like this at home. All told, a worth-every-penny adventure. Viva Obama, Bobby Buka, New York City, August 2008

P.S. While we enjoyed each of our port visits, Ogun's Place at Ova Buku was particularly memorable!

Gocek to Ova Buku (Cruising Cleopatra's Route). Please occasionally lift the lazarette hatch behind the helm and throw a few crumbs inside - that's where I am - stowed away because I can't leave the T.G. Ellyson! We had a great time and would definitely do it again, but next time with hairnets! Thanks, Kara King, New York City, August 2008

Crewed Charter Sailing Greece

Kos to Simi (Sailing The Greek Cyclades). Great trip in all! Maybe a little more sailing than I anticipated, but I must say....I will do this again. Thanks for taking care of us. We felt completely at ease knowing you were in control, and we enjoyed your knowledge of the islands and their history. Viva Obama!!! Jeff Houston, San Francisco, California, September 2008

Kos to Simi (Sailing The Greek Cyclades). Gordon - You continue to maintain the proud Ellyson tradition and you are a very-capable captain! We enjoyed all the sights. Personally, I particularly enjoyed the sailing. The "Wine Dark Seas" were soothing (maybe a little less so when the wind was blowing 30 and 40 knots in the Cyclades, but never the less). Best Wishes in Derbyshire. Ian Moller, San Francisco, California, September 2008

So this disclaimer is about idling under a gentle sun over and azure sea while exploring the crossroads of history. This was the crewed charter sailing yacht T.G. Ellyson's twenty-sixth year in the Mediterranean. As in all other years the 2008 charter year was one of enthusiastic guests eager to sail, eager to hike, and eager to explore the evidence of ancient and medieval civilization. It was another wonderful charter year of brick-oven cuisine and Crewed
Charter Sailing TurkeyGreek taverna dining, and it was another year of search for the perfect octopus salad, with a 9.5 on a scale of one to ten awarded in June to the chef at Taverna Pirofani in Pandeli, Leros, the highest award in our history. It was also another year of search for the company of dolphins, a search particularly rewarded on the final day of the season between Simi and Gocek when the TGE was surrounded by twenty-five to thirty of these fellow mammals swimming in company, including those in the photo to the right. The year was notable as well for numerous excursions through the Greek Dodecanese as far as Patmos and Astipalaia, visiting Greek Lipsi, Arki, and Nisiros, as well as Tilos, Simi (Symi), Kos, Rhodes, and Leros, frequently sailing under Samos. Samos is an island with a long and fascinating history, one including remarkable engineering feats in antiquity, one including naval supremacy in the Aegean following the 6th century BC advent of the Samian 50-oared penteconter, and one including a long visit by Cleopatra in 32 BC. A little known facet of the island's history is its depopulation following a severe earthquake in AD 1476 and its re-population eighty-six years later by a former Dominican novice named Luca Galeni. Subsequently a corsair known as Crewed Charter Sailing GreeceUluc Ali who gained fame in numerous engagements with the Knights of Malta, Galeni rose to become one of Barbarossa's sea captains at the 1538 Battle of Preveza, one of Dragut's lieutenants during the 1565 siege of Malta, and commander of the Ottoman left wing at the 1571 Battle of Lepanto. He was later promoted to Lord High Admiral of the Ottoman Navy. It was in 1562 that he anchored an Ottoman flotilla off deserted Samos and became enamored of its beauty and history. He applied to Sultan Suleiman for permission to repopulate the island. The application was granted with the stipulation that no Turk would be permitted to settle on Samos, thus ensuring its Greek heritage to this day. Charter yacht holidays exploring Aegean Greece. But there was also fine sailing by the TGE through the mid-Aegean Cyclades with visits to Paros, Santorini, and Anafi, among others. Our visit to Piso Livadhi, Paros, (photo just above) was particularly notable for its Cycladic charm, good food, and secluded swimming coves. Is any of this the holiday for which you are searching?
